Where is Fredericton?
Fredericton is the capital city of the province of New Brunswick located on the Atlantic coast of Canada. It is one of 3 Maritime provinces along with Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. It is 8 hours east of Montreal and 7 hours north of Boston.

Do you have a school orientation?
Each school will do their own orientation to their building and the way they conduct business.

When can I apply?

Semester One:
School starts on the first Tuesday after September 1st
    · We accept applications beginning: March 15th
    · Application deadline: May 30th

Semester Two:
School begins late January or early February
    · We accept applications beginning: September 15th
    · Application deadline: November 15th

Please note: The application could take between 2-3 weeks to be processed



When should students arrive?
It is always best to arrive at the beginning of the semester. Students should arrive prior to the new semester. This gives them time to register and select courses. It also gives you time to adjust to any time change and get familiar with the city.

When are the vacations?
There are 2 weeks off at Christmas time and one week for MARCH BREAK which is always the first full week of March. There are several one day holidays throughout the year and a 4 day weekend at Easter time, typically in April. Classes end for the year by the 30th of June.

Can students travel to different cities for vacation by themselves?
International Students can only travel with a school or district sanctioned event OR unless in the company of their Homestay families.

Do you have a custodian program? How much does it cost?
Homestay International WebsiteThe Custodianship is to be arranged through your Homestay provider, either Canada Homestay International or a private arrangement that you would take care of. Use the attached forms as provided by Canada Immigration. Fees for this service are established by CHI.

If students are unhappy with their Homestay what do they do?
CHI will have 24 hours/7 days a week emergency contact numbers as well as a local coordinator. Students can discuss their problem with them. If you are placed privately, unfortunately, you will have to work out your difficulties yourself. However, we are always here to help guide you in the right direction.

Do students take regular classes? What about ESL support?
School District 18 takes an IMMERSION PLUS approach. This means the students are totally immersed in the language by being registered in regular classes with everyone else while those who require assistance can get daily ESL support. Usually, elementary students get 30mins. and the middle school students get 45mins. , while the high school students receive 1 or 2 hours of daily ESL instruction depending on their language proficiency!

How do students get to and from school?
This depends on where students live. Students who live within 2.4kms of the school will walk to school or can pay for public transportation. Those living outside of the 2.4 kms have the privilege of taking the school bus service provided free by the school district. If students are involved in after school clubs or teams, they will have to make transportation arrangements with the host family.

Can I graduate from High School in New Brunswick?
Yes, you can graduate from a New Brunswick High School. Understand that students expecting to graduate from our schools must complete all of the requirements for graduation for the Province of New Brunswick. Students must successfully complete grade 10 in order to advance to the grade 11 and 12 credits necessary for graduation.

What courses are offered?
Both Leo Hayes High School and Fredericton High School offer a full complement of courses. Rural schools, because they are smaller, offer a smaller number of courses. However, many courses are available through “Distance Education” which provides courses offered in larger schools via electronic distribution. Grade 11-12 courses are leveled, with Level 2 being University preparation and Level 1 being advanced.

Do you offer International Baccalaureate (IB) or Advanced Placement (AP)?
School District 18 does not offer IB programs but FHS does offer several AP courses each year which can be viewed on their website.

Refund Policy
Where valid reason for withdrawal occurs, as determined by SD18, a pro-rated refund will be made based on the cost of the monthly tuition. Students withdrawing before the 15th of the month will have that month’s tuition included in their refund. Whereas, students withdrawing after the 15th of the month will forfeit that month’s tuition. Refunds will be payable only be made to the one who paid the tuition originally.

What other fees apply?
Additional fees, beyond tuition, occur if students choose to join an extracurricular sports team or club which charges a registration fee that all participants must pay. School lab fees will also be extra but should be very minimal.

What is the climate like?
Generally the climate is moderate, it varies from mild to hot in the summer and in winter from moderate to very cold. Average summer rain fall is 85mm (3.3") per month. Summer temperature is range is from 23°C to 30°C. Winter temperature is from 0°C to -25°C

What kind of clothes should I bring?
Fredericton has 4 seasons so you will need everything from shorts and sandals to boots and winter jackets. Don’t worry about the cold weather, you quickly get used to it. We all wear layers of clothing so you can take off or add on what you need.
